Nepali swimmer Gaurika Singh has finished her event with an average
result in the ongoing Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Despite
coming first in the heat of 100 metres backstroke which had three
competitors, Gaurika was short of qualifying to the next round due to
her timing. She clocked 1 minute 8 seconds to finish the race, which is
below par to the national record she set herself. The result of the heat
round of her event showed Gaurika placed 31st out of 34 contenders.
Gaurika's journey in Rio Olympics has also concluded with yesterday's
event. Another Nepali swimmer towards the men's category Shirish Gurung
remains to enter Rio waters in his event of 100 metres freestyle. Nepali
archer Jit Bahadur Moktan will take on India's Atanu Das in the second
round of the competition tomorrow. In Judo, Phupu Lhamu Khatri will be
vying against her Cuban opponent in the their 63 k.g. category also on
Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Michael Phelps won a record 19th Olympic gold medal as the United States clinched the men's 4x100m freestyle relay title in Rio. The 31-year-old came to Brazil as the most decorated Olympian in history and has now won 23 medals at five Games.
Phelps came out of retirement in 2014, having quit after London 2012. Great Britain won their first medal of Rio 2016 as Adam Peaty took gold in the men's 100m breaststroke with a world record. Peaty is the first British man to win an Olympic swimming gold medal since Adrian Moorhouse, who won the same event in Seoul in 1988. Unites States currently leads the Olympics medal tally followed by China and Australia.
