An inbound flight of Turkish Airways A3-30 has managed to avert a
dangerous mishap during its landing at Tribhuwan International Airport
today. In course of its forced landing this morning, the front part of
the aircraft skidded off to a grassy area between two runways. The pane
had aborted its first attempt at landing at 7:12 a.m. after the front
wheel failed to open up, following which it had to hover in the air for
some time. The pilot had to force an emergency landing after the second
attempt at 7:40 was also unsuccessful. TIA's Spokesman Purna Chudal
informed that all necessary preparations had been made to minimize the
potential damage to the aircraft and the people on board after that. The
emergency landing was not completely successful either because of poor
visibility. Immediately after the aircraft came to a halt, its emergency
doors were opened, from where the passengers were evacuated. The
information relayed by the airport states that the front part and the
left engine of the aircraft have been damaged. All 224 passengers on
board are safe. Meanwhile, all operation of flights at the Tribhuwan
International Airport have been put on hold till 4p.m. tomorrow, as
effort is underway to tow away the plane which is stuck at the airport
ground. Turkish Air is the airline which operates flights from the
longest distance to and from Kathmandu, with flights being up to 7 hours
long.
