Nepal Sambat 1136 begins; Various programs across the country mark the New Year


Nepal Sambat or Nepal Era 1136 has begun today. Historians credit Sankhadhar Sakhwa for founding the the national lunar calendar of the country. Sakhwa was a Nepali philanthropist who cleared the debts of all the people in Nepal and started a new era on that date. Outdoor celebrations of the new year consist of cultural processions and rallies. Participants from the Newar community dressed in traditional attire parade on the streets. Musical bands playing various kinds of drums take part in the processions. Streets and market squares are decorated with gates and banners bearing new year greetings. The Nepal Sambat movement achieved its first success on 18 November 1999 when the government declared the founder of the calendar Sakhwa, a national hero. Meanwhile, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli have extended greetings on the occasion of Nepal Sambat 1136. President Bhandari opined the new year will strengthen social harmony and reconciliation among Nepalis. Likewise, Prime Minister Oli wished peace and prosperity among all Nepalis home and abroad.
