Tamor river in worst condition
The lake on Tamor river created by
the landslide at Sawadin VDC in Taplejung is in the same perilous
condition. The landslip that slid from Nakla cliff in Sawadin VDC at
2a.m. Sunday has since blocked the flow of Tamor river. The river
blockage has created a lake 600 metres long and 200 metres wide, which
has started flooding into areas towards Furumbu. Clearing the landslip
has been difficult as huge rocks have also come down with the mud,
according to the locals. Residents of VDCs beyond the site of the
created lake including Handrung, Dovan and Khokling are in a vulnerable
situation with the risk of flood occurring any time. The flash flood
that might develop immediately if the blockage is removed has posed
grave danger to the residents of these places, as informed by District
Police Office, Taplejung. It has informed that there was no access of
road to the site of the landslip, and that removing the blockage was
difficult with the river starting to cut in towards Furumbu. A team of
personnel from Nepal Army, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force which
had set off from the district headquarters on Sunday to clear the
obstruction has also returned with a futile result.
