Humla landslide
The landslide that occurred last night at Limi in Humla has blocked the
flow of Karnali river. Residents living in the lower areas from the site
of the landslide were panic stricken, and have headed to safe places in
the higher parts of the district. The District Administration Office,
Humla has informed that residents of other surrounding VDCs have also
evacuated their homes and headed to safer areas. Chief District Officer
of Humla Krishna Bahadur Katwal said the administration had urged all
local residents to shift to safer places. Though it is yet to be
ascertained whether the river has been blocked by a landslide or an
avalanche, more than a dozen VDCs of the western parts are likely to be
affected by the mishap, according to Katwal. It is learnt the potential
surge of water after a sudden explosion of the blocked area could have
dangerous effects in places like Mugu, Humla, Kalikot, Dailekh, Bajura,
Surkhet and even Bardiya. With the river blocked in Limi, the flow of
water has reduced substantially in the lower parts of the river. The
continuous rain and snowfall for the last two days has made life
difficult in Humla.
