Social Justice and Human Rights Committee
The Social Justice and Human Rights Committee of the Legislature
Parliament has issued directive to the government to bring Nepal Army's
Colonel Kumar Lama- who was arrested in England on a guilty charge over
crimes during the conflict period- back to Nepal. Saying the Truth and
Reconciliation Commission had already formed with the mandate to settle
the conflict related cases, the Committee's meeting held today has
directed the government to bring Colonel Lama back to the country. The
government's alleged indifference towards bringing Lama back was also
criticized during the meeting. Talking to media-persons after the
meeting, President of the Committee Sushil Shrestha said it was sad that
the government had failed to take any step even when the country's
nationalism and sovereignty were put to question when a serving colonel
of Nepal Army had been arrested by another country. BITE... Speaking on
behalf of the government, Minister of Law Narahari Acharya noted that
the government was making all kinds of attempt in bringing Colonel Lama
back to Nepal, saying the Committee's directive would further ease the
overall process. He also informed that the government had formed a
separate committee which was working towards bringing Lama back. BITE...
In the meeting prior to this, Congress Vice-President Ramchandra Poudel
had alleged that England had interfered in the internal matters of
Nepal. Saying the government had also failed to take up any diplomatic
measure, he had urged the concerned sides to take the matter seriously.
All members speaking at the meeting today had demanded Colonel Lama be
brought back to Nepal.
