Kukur Tihar, the second day of the
five-day Tihar festival, was observed across the country today. On the
occasion, devotees worship dogs and offer them garlands, tika and delicious
food. The Hindu mythology regards a dog as the guard of Yamaraj, the god of
death. Dogs are considered reliable, trustworthy and loyal domestic animals.
Meanwhile, a collective puja for trained dogs was held at Nepal Police
Academy, Maharajgunj today. Tomorrow is the third day of Yamampanchak known
as Gai Tihar or Laxmi Puja. On this day, cows are worshipped early in the
morning. The cow is regarded as the mother and Laxmi, the goddess of wealth
by Hindus. The fourth day of the festival is Govardhan Puja when oxen are
worshiped. The fifth or the last day of Yama Panchak is Bhai Tika. On this
day, sisters put tika on their brothers’ forehead and wish them long life and
prosperity.
