NC obstructs Parliament proceeding
Protesting against the delay of the
government in carrying out relief and reconstruction works even after a
lapse of 14 months since the major earthquake, main opposition Nepali
Congress obstructed the Parliament proceeding today. The opposition
party has warned of halting the House proceeding until the government's
pledge of 200 thousand rupees for earthquake victims is brought into
effect. Congress has said the government had not responded despite the
issue of reconstruction being raised in the Parliament for the last nine
days. Speaker Onsari Gharti has also repeatedly ruled the government to
respond on the reconstruction works to the Parliament. However, the
government is yet to say anything about it. Congress has said it was
compelled to obstruct the House session due to the government's
indifference on the matter. At the commence of House meeting today,
parliamentarians of Nepali Congress demanded clarification on the
condition of reconstruction works and distribution of the relief amount
to the earthquake victims. Congress parliamentarian Dr. Ramsharan Mahat
voiced alarm saying not even survey works had begun in the 20 districts
affected by the earthquake. According to the data of the National
Reconstruction Authority, the government has to provide Rs.200 thousand
each for construction of nearly 700,000 homes across the country.
