Constituent Assembly, Nepal Chairman assigns deadline

Constituent Assembly Chair Subas Nembang has assigned the deadline of March 29 to the political parties to forge agreement. The suggestion from the CA Chair on forging consensus within March 29 came following his discussion with Chief Whips of various parties today. CA Chair Nembang informed of taking a decision regarding the meeting of the CA on his own if agreement was not forged by 5 p.m. of March 29.
Chief Whips of political parties including Nepali Congress and CPN-UML expressed support on the proposal of the CA Chair. Saying that the CA could not be held hostage in name of consensus, they suggested the CA Chair to initiate set procedures along with efforts for agreement. Following the meeting, UML Chief Whip Agni Kharel informed that there was no alternative to forging consensus or following set procedures for the internal affairs of the constitution.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties including the Unified CPN-Maoist opined that they could leave the CA if the meeting of the Assembly was called sans agreement. Saying that the Front had implemented the policy of boycotting so far, Chief Whip of Unified-Maoist Girirajmani Pokhrel said that they could review the same if set procedures were followed.
The meeting of the Constituent Assembly has been postponed since February 12 in the name of agreement among the parties.
